Small Beginnings

Zechariah 4:10... "Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin. .."
I first grasped this concept of small beginnings when I read James Clear's Atomic Habits, and it was reinforced when Kendra Adachi told us to "make it smaller." Contemplating this phenomenon in my own life one day, I was transported back to the pages of a dusty Bible when a messenger from the Lord reminded us - almost scolded us - to not dare despise these small beginnings. And then, I thought, what if the entire universe understands this truth that modern society has tried to hide with her productivity gospel. The scandal of a lifetime, convincing us that these small beginnings don't matter. And as I looked, I saw it everywhere.... it in the tiny buds of spring, in the white wisps blowing from dandelions, in the precious babes of all species that start from but one cell. It's there in the first step of a toddler who - even after falling - is wildly celebrated for that single step, for all those around her know it is but one of millions. It is the beginning of a journey. No one expects the toddler's first step to launch a marathon or a mountain climb. Why have we let a society so drunk on productivity, fast cash and cheap greatness convince us that if we can't sprint from the starting line that we aren't worthy to show up.
Show up. Again and again. Start small. Fall down. And step again. You will find your way.
